The First: Media Library is the online video store - and video-on-demand supply are the first German television . The offer was first presented at IFA 2007 and launched in May 2008. Since the relaunch in February 2011, the video-on-demand platform has had a new design. She is being looked after by the online editorial team DasErste.de in Munich.

The Das Erste Mediathek currently offers around 90 regular programs and series as video-on-demand in full length as well as individual contributions or summaries. The videos are kept for different lengths of time depending on the editorial motivation and availability of the rights, the time span ranges from 24 hours (for certain major sporting events) to a year. Selected formats such as the ARD morning magazine and the ARD midday magazine , the Tagesschau , the Tagesthemen and the Nachtmagazin as well as Rote Rosen , Sturm der Liebe and mostly also the TV film at 8:15 pm are offered as a live stream. Some programs can also be subscribed to and downloaded as audio or video podcasts .

Due to the transmission technology used (via the Internet), all content is in principle available worldwide and can be accessed at no additional cost. As an exception, individual live streams of major sporting events such as the European Football Championship are limited nationally with the help of the IP address ( geoblocking ).

The range of broadcasts is continuously being expanded. Currently, the spectrum ranges from films ( crime scene , police call ) and series ( Storm of Love , Forbidden Love , Metropolitan Area , For Heaven's Sake ) to news, political magazines and talk shows ( Tagesschau , Anne Will , Beckmann , Hart aber Fair and Menschen bei Maischberger , Weltspiegel ) as well as entertainment programs ( Harald Schmidt , nuhr im Erste , Tim Mälzer, Das Duell) to advisors and children's programs such as the factual stories from the show with the mouse . However, certain fictional productions or purchased feature films cannot currently be made available in the media library due to the legal situation.

All video content of the first can also be accessed via the ARD media library , the comprehensive audio and video portal of the ARD state broadcasters and community facilities. The multimedia offers of the radio waves, the third programs and the first are thematically bundled here. Both media libraries are based on the same technical platform.

The videos can be selected in various ways: "Programs AZ" offers an alphabetical listing of all available formats. “Top Videos” provides an overview of the latest and most frequently viewed clips. The "Topics" area provides a list of programs sorted by genre. All live streams are announced under “Live” and the menu item “Program missed” shows at a glance which programs are available as video on demand. "Podcast" leads to an overview of the available podcast and download content. The start page contains a cross-section of the various search options and announces current real-time broadcasts with the note “Live now”.

Resolutions and formats

The programs offered as video-on-demand are optimized in the formats Flash (Windows, OS X and Linux), Windows Media (only Windows and OS X) and HTML5 (all), each in different resolutions for both modem and DSL , provided. Since September 2008, some content has also been offered in an even higher resolution version (HQ = High Quality). Podcasts can be downloaded in QuickTime MPEG4 / H.264 (video) or MP3 (audio) format , and live streams can be viewed in Windows Media and RealVideo (Windows only) formats . Depending on the format of the television program, the videos are broadcast in different formats.
