W wie Wissen is a television program that has been produced since 2003 as a joint production of the ARD broadcasters BR , SWR , WDR , NDR and HR . It emerged from the environmental and knowledge magazine Globus (1981–2002).

The science magazine has been produced weekly since May 7, 2003. Initially, W wie Wissen was broadcast on Wednesdays at 9.45 p.m. and from January 2006 to August 2014 it ran on Sundays at 5:03 p.m. on Das Erste . Since September 6, 2014, the new slot has been on Saturdays at 4 p.m.

Ursula Heller (BR) conducted the show until July 20, 2005 . After a six-month break, Ranga Yogeshwar (WDR) took over the moderation from January 8, 2006 (until December 2007). Dennis Wilms (SWR) has been moderating W for Knowledge since January 6, 2008 .

Since January 21, 2004, an integral part of the magazine has been a humorous column designed by the doctor and cabaret artist Eckart von Hirschhausen . By July 2005 he answered under the motto “Dr. von Hirschhausen wants to know "tricky audience questions and from January to July 2006" Hirschhausen's WissensBisse "dealt with outlandish news from science. In August 2006, Hirschhausen's contributions were replaced by the heading “The world in numbers”. In it, viewers learn surprising and curious figures on the main topic of the program in about one and a half minute animated spots.

Since March 2011, the program has also been broadcast in HDTV with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.
