Fresh off the press is an ARD literary magazine moderated by Denis Scheck , which has existed since February 2003 and has been broadcast on the last Sunday of the month at 23:35 since the end of 2009. Andreas Ammer was responsible for the realization and design from the start . The show is a joint production by BR , hr , mdr , NDR and WDR .

Structure of the program

Moderator Denis Scheck usually opens every issue of the program with a greeting to the audience: “ Good evening and a warm welcome to the late night good book! "However, preliminary presents him an announcer from the off with the words:" And here he comes, your fighter for the good, the beautiful, true. “Scheck leads through the half-hour program, which is divided into episodes in reviews (monologue), interviews (dialogue with an author) and a quick review (monologue) of the top ten of a Spiegel bestseller list, alternately fiction and non-fiction. In addition, there are occasional section concepts that deviate from this, for example a "Denis Scheck recommends" section, in which he stands in a bookstore in the best bookseller fashion and recommends suitable books to individual customers based on their wishes.

The sequence of sections varies from broadcast to broadcast. A typical program composition is review – interview – top ten – interview. Between the episodes there are short transition sequences, accompanied by selected pieces of music; the music is explicitly listed on the website.

Review section concept

New literary publications and occasionally older works that are worth reading from Scheck's point of view are presented in a relaxed, humorous way. Usually, the reviewer is essentially filmed while walking by a camera showing him from the front. The recording takes place somewhere in the world that has some kind of thematic connection to the book, and is normally only used once as a filming location.

Interview section concept

Interviews are held with authors of current works. The dialogue usually takes place while sitting on two chairs facing each other or similar. Regularly recurring decorative elements are red and white flutter tape with fresh inscription and a fire extinguisher. The location of the interview is not fixed, but is usually not repeated.

Top ten section concept

Occasionally, accompanied by live music, in the warehouse of the same Cologne book wholesaler, a stack of books is run through at high speed, alternating from broadcast to broadcast from the top ten entries on the Spiegel bestseller list of non-fiction or fiction. Scheck gives his criticism to every book in a top-or-flop method and - if a book is not worth reading in his eyes - it throws it directly onto a roller slide leading to a garbage can .
