Karen Köhler (* 1974 in Hamburg ) is a German writer , playwright and actress .

Life

Karen Köhler was born in the Hamburg district of Barmbek as the daughter of a fire fighter and a geriatric nurse. After elementary school and high school, she studied drama at the University of Music and Theater in Bern and practiced the profession until 2014, initially in permanent engagements, then as a freelancer. In 2008 she started working as a writer (drama and prose) and as an illustrator

In 2010 she became a member of the Hamburg Authors' Forum and in 2011 received the Hamburg Literature Prize . In 2014 she was invited to read for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize and received special attention because she was not allowed to come because of chickenpox . In solidarity with those who were absent, there was a spontaneous, unofficial reading of Karen Köhler's text “Il Comandante” at Klagenfurt's Lendhafen after the first day of reading , which was broadcast live on the Internet. This text is part of the volume of stories We have fished rockets , which reached number 36 on the bestseller list (hardcover fiction) after its publication in the summer of 2014. a. was nominated for the aspects literature prize and has been translated into several languages. As a result, Köhler received various scholarships and stays abroad.

For DNT Weimar , she wrote a series of plays ( hero trilogy ) from 2013 to 2015 , which deals with the topic of right-wing extremism and is now performed in theaters nationwide.

In 2019, Köhler was nominated for the German Screenplay Prize for her script Cowboy & Indianer (co-author: Michael Venus) , which was awarded at the Berlinale 2019 .

For her debut novel Miroloi , which was published by Carl Hanser Verlag in August 2019 and was on the longlist of the German Book Prize 2019, she received various grants, including a. the annual grant from the German Literature Fund .
