Eoin Colfer (pronunciation: [ ˈoʊ.ən ], "Owen") (born May 14, 1965 in Wexford ) is an Irish teacher, writer and author of books for children and young people .

Life

Eoin Colfer was born the second of five brothers on the south east coast of Ireland, where he attended Christian Brothers Primary School. His father was a teacher and historian , and his mother taught drama . As a child he wrote and illustrated his own stories. After finishing school, he studied teaching at "Carysfort College" (1977 to 1988) at the University of Dublin . From there he returned to Wexford in 1986, where he taught at the local elementary school, engaged in theater, and wrote stories in the nights. In 1991 Colfer married his childhood sweetheart Jackie. He spent the years 1992 to 1996 abroad with her, teaching at schools in Saudi Arabia , Tunisia and Italy . Many of his stories have been inspired by his experiences on these trips. He then took a job at Coolcotts National School, an elementary school for children with learning disabilities, where he taught English, math, history and performing games. Colfer lives in Wexford with his wife and two children.

Colfer's first novel Benny and Omar (1998) was already a success, which was quickly followed by a sequel. He established his fame with Artemis Fowl (2001) and switched to full-time writing. The series has sold over 20 million copies worldwide to date. His previous books have topped the bestseller lists in Ireland, Great Britain and the USA . He is one of the most successful contemporary authors of books for children and young people in Europe .

Colfer's motto is: “I will keep writing until people stop reading or I run out of ideas. Hopefully neither of these will happen anytime soon. "(" I will keep writing until people stop reading or run out of ideas. Hopefully neither will happen too soon. ")

Work and meaning

Colfer became internationally famous with his series about Artemis Fowl , so that the first volume was already implemented as a comic (illustrated by Giovanni Rigano ) and filmed . With his mixture of fantasy and science fiction , he seemed worthy enough to the widow of Douglas Adams to write a sequel to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , which, by the way, is called ... and was released in 2009.

Colfer writes crime novels , detective stories , science fiction and fantasy for adults, children and young people. Artemis Fowl has often been compared to Harry Potter , but apart from the fact that both series are fantastic literature , they have little in common. In addition, he writes books that are set in reality. But they, too, always point beyond the purely visible or everyday, in that figures are depicted overdrawn or objects and situations are given a mysterious meaning.

Colfer's heroes are never "smooth" or mostly good as in many other children's and young people's books. On the contrary, they are often portrayed as rascal, sly or even criminal like (the at the same time highly intelligent) Artemis Fowl . As a result, Colfer also shows the negative sides of people and creates multifaceted and versatile characters.
