Irish Book Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Irish Book Award (officially An Post Irish Book Awards , until 2017 Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards ) is an Irish literary prize that has been awarded annually in late autumn since 2006 in numerous, occasionally changing categories. The predecessor was the Irish Novel of the Year Prize since 2000 . With the exception of the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award (for life's work), new works are honored , the authors only indirectly. Due to changing sponsors for the individual categories, their names can change from year to year.

The shortlists are compiled by Irish booksellers and librarians. The Irish Literary Academy selects the winning titles in the categories of novel, non-fiction, children's book, youth book, newcomer, book from an Irish publisher, sports book, crime novel and others. There is also an audience award for entertainment literature and an audience award for the “Book of the Year”, which is selected from all award winners and announced in January of the following year. Furthermore, a prize will be awarded for life's work, the bearer of which will be named shortly before the general award gala.

In 2010, a one-time award for the Irish Book of the Decade was also awarded: Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy .
