An Post ( Irish for “the Post ”; Irish pronunciation [ ən̪ˠ pˠɔsˠt̪ˠ ]) is the state-owned postal company of the Republic of Ireland and a member of the Universal Postal Union . In 2006 the company's profit was around 76 million euros.
An Post was not created until 1984, as the Department of Posts & Telegraphs was responsible for both mail and telephone . In 1984 this department was divided into the Post and Telecom Éireann (today: Eircom ). The Irish government announced the introduction of postcodes on January 1, 2008, while An Post protested that such a system was not necessary. The postal code system known as the Eircode was finally introduced in 2014.
An Post is one of the largest employers in the country, although losses are regularly incurred in certain regions.
