William Trevor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Trevor (born May 24, 1928 in Mitchelstown , County Cork , Ireland , † November 20, 2016 in Somerset , England ; actually William Trevor Cox ) was an Irish writer .

biography

William Trevor was born in predominantly Catholic Ireland to a Protestant family. So he felt “an outsider from the start”. His father managed bank branches in different places; the family therefore moved frequently. Trevor studied history at Trinity College in Dublin , worked as a teacher after graduation and made a name for himself as a sculptor at an early age. He moved to England in 1952, where he taught art in rugby and Taunton .

His first novel A Standard of Behavior was published in 1958, Trevor later refused to allow reprints. From 1960 to 1965 he worked in London as a copywriter until he became a freelance writer. He wrote novels, short stories and plays. His stories were regularly published in the New Yorker .

Trevor has received many literary prizes and was made an Honorary CBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 and a Knight of Honor in 2002 . He made his breakthrough in Germany with the psychological thriller Felicias Reise (1994).

Trevor married in 1952 and last lived with his wife Jane in Devon , England. They had two sons together.

subjects

In his 23 novels and 11 volumes of short story, Trevor dealt with tensions between outsiders and society; his characters are mildly eccentric and melancholy loners. The relationship between the British and Irish and the aftermath of their violent history play a central role in many of his books.

With their strongly developed emotions, his characters encounter social limitations that they are often unwilling to accept. In many cases these are marginalized outsiders: children, old people, loners or unhappily married people. They create their own reality, withdraw there and often reach the limits of madness.

Trevor's topics are anger and anger, the rubbing together of empathy and transference, and strategies for dealing with blows of fate. He is considered a writer of atmospheric impressionism, the feelings of his protagonists can transform memories, their past overlay the present.
