The place

M8 at Mitchelstown

Mitchelstown is located in the extreme northeast of County Cork , on the border with southeastern County Limerick and close to County Tipperary , and is heavily agricultural. Due to its location on the M8 / N8 to Cork and the national road N73 to Mallow (and further on as the N72 to Killarney in County Kerry ), the place is well developed in terms of transport and tourism.

From the 8th to the 19th century there was a round tower at Brigown. The modern city was planned and built by the Earl of Kingston between 1775 and 1820 . In 1798 he built the Mitchelstown Castle, which was based on the Windsor Castle . In 1922, during the Irish Civil War , it was set on fire by the rebels to prevent government forces from using it. Stones from the ruins were used to expand and remodel other buildings in Mount Melleray Monastery .
