Killarney ( Irish Cill Airne , "The Church of the Sloes ") is a town with 14,504 inhabitants (2016) in County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland .

location

The city is located on the northern foothills of Macgillycuddy's Reeks , Ireland's highest mountain range , and near Lough Leane , the largest of the three lakes in Killarney National Park .

tourism

Tourism is by far the most important industry in the city. In the Republic of Ireland, only the capital Dublin has more hotel beds. Most of the attractions are outside the city. Killarney is the starting point of the Kerry Way hiking trail . In addition to numerous hotels and relatively few B&B accommodation options , Killarney also hosts a large number of hostels ; Aghadoe House , Killarney's international youth hostel , is located 6 km northwest of town on the N22 in Fossa .

Killarney can be reached via Kerry Airport, which is 20 km north of Killarney at Farranfore . The place also has a railway connection to Dublin and bus connections to, among other places, Cork , Tralee and Limerick .

The city is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kerry . The main church is Killarney's St. Mary's Cathedral .

Others

Rudolf Erich Raspe, known for his satirical Münchhausen stories , is buried in an anonymous poor grave near Killarney, in the Killeaghy cemetery. While advising the owner of the Muckross estate on the development of the copper mines located there, Raspe fell ill with scarlet fever and died in November 1794.

The German Hans Liebherr built a crane factory in Killarney in 1958 as the first industrial site of his group of companies outside of Germany, which is about halfway between Killarney and Fossa and which is still an important part of the Liebherr Group today. Bing Crosby recorded the song Christmas in Killarney in 1961 for the album White Christmas .

In 2007, Killarney was Ireland's gold medal winner in the City category of the Entente Florale Europe competition .

Wolfgang Hohlbein's novel Drachenfeuer is set in Killarney, among others. It is about the nearby castle Ross Castle , whose preservation is endangered by explosions in history.
