The St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Killarney in Ireland's County Kerry . It is also the episcopal church of the Diocese of Kerry .

history

Before the neo-Gothic Killarney Cathedral was built, masses were held in a small chapel. Joseph O'Sullivan, a pastor from Dingle , came up with the idea of building a cathedral; Bishop Cornelius Egan and a local nobleman loved the idea.

In 1828 a committee for the construction of a cathedral was established. In 1840 the architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin prepared a blueprint for the cathedral. The foundation stone was laid in the summer of 1842. In May 1848 construction came to a standstill because of the great famine in Ireland .

At the beginning of 1853 construction work resumed under the direction of JJ McCarthy . On August 22, 1855, the church was dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It is located directly on one of the entrances to Killarney National Park and is the third largest cathedral in Ireland. Her tower is 86.8 meters high.
