Jewish cemetery in Sinzig

The Sinzig Jewish Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery in Sinzig in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate, which was established in 1873 . It is a protected cultural monument .

The Jewish community of Sinzig has its origins as early as the 13th century and Jews have lived in Sinzig continuously from the 14th century. Before the new Jewish cemetery was completed in 1873, the Sinzig Jews had buried their dead on the Mühlenberg in the Sinzig city forest. There are no more traces of the old cemetery today. The Jewish cemetery on Koisdorfer Strasse, laid out in 1873 , with an area of 496 m², is today enclosed on three sides by the Christian cemetery and is separated from it by hedges. The Christian cemetery was laid out 35 years later and has grown around the Jewish one through several expansions, including an unused part of the Jewish cemetery.

The first desecration occurred in May 1877 when three gravestones were knocked over. There was also desecration during the National Socialist era . The first burial was in 1873 and the last in 1940 (married couple Abraham and Emma Meyer). In the Third Reich , a large part of the gravestones was apparently cleared, as only 44 of the at least 80 grave sites are still provided with gravestones .

In November 1942 the cemetery was bought by the city of Sinzig at a price of RM 0.25 per m². In August 1949 the cemetery was returned to the Jewish asset management. On August 30, 1958, the northern half of the cemetery returned to the ownership of the city and was included in the occupancy of the Christian cemetery. For the victims of the National Socialist persecution , a stone plaque with the inscription “To the Jewish victims 1933–1945” was put up in 1950.
