The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kerry ( ir. : Deoise Chiarraí , lat. : Dioecesis Kerriensis ) is in Ireland situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Killarney .

history

Killarney Cathedral of Mary

The diocese of Ardfert has probably existed since the 6th century and in its original extent comprised the northern part of County Kerry . Even before the Synod of Rathbreasail in 1111, the diocese of Aghadoe was incorporated, so that the diocese expanded over the whole of County Kerry. Therefore, since 1152, since the Synod of Kells , it has been called the Diocese of Kerry and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Cashel as a suffragan . When the English Reformation was carried out in the diocese in 1536 through the appointment of an Anglican bishop, only two priests switched to the Roman Catholic Church . In 1661 the Anglican diocese of Ardfert was united with the diocese of Limerick . The Roman Catholic jurisdiction for Ardfert passed to the diocese of Kerry and Aghadoe around the same time . On December 20, 1952, the diocese of Kerry (o Ardfert) and Aghadoe was renamed the Diocese of Kerry .
