The Diocese of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora ( ir. : Deoise na Gaillimhe, Chill Mhic Dhuach agus Chill Fhionnúrach , lat. : Dioecesis Galviensis, Duacensis et Finaborensis ) is in Ireland situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Galway .
history
The Diocese of Galway was founded on April 26, 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Sedium Episcopalium and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Tuam as a suffragan . Galway had already been canonically independent since 1484 and was administered by a warden and 8 vicars. On June 5, 1883, the Diocese of Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora was annexed to the Diocese of Galway . The dioceses of Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora were established at the Synod of Kells in 1132 and united in 1751. However, both dioceses are located in different church provinces (Kilmacduagh in Tuam, Kilfenora in Cashel), so that the seat of the bishop changed and the bishop administered the other part of the diocese as apostolic administrator . Since 1883 the Bishop of Galway and Kilmacduagh has been the permanent Apostolic Administrator for the former Diocese of Kilfenora.
