The diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise ( Latin Dioecesis Ardachadensis et Cluanensis , Irish Deoise Ardach agus Chluain Mhic Nóis , English Diocese of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise ) is a Roman Catholic diocese located in Ireland , named after the places and former bishops Ardaghise and Clonmacnoise . The present bishopric is Longford .

The diocese of Ardagh was founded in the 5th century, the first bishop is St. Mel, a nephew and colleague of St. Patrick and today's patron of the diocese. 1152 the diocese of Ardagh was finally established in the Synod of Kells and the Archdiocese of Armagh as a suffragan . In 1756 it was united with the diocese of Clonmacnoise.
