Longford ( Irish An Longfort ) is a city in the central interior of the Republic of Ireland and the administrative seat of the county of the same name .
history
The founding of the city goes back to the Vikings, who built a longphort (from Irish long "ship" and port "harbor" or "dock"). Later the city came under the power of local clans who controlled the south and the center of Longford County, so that Longford was sometimes referred to as Longphort Uí Fhearghail (Fort of the O'Farrells), for a Dominican monastery founded here in 1400 .

The population of Longford was determined in the 2016 Census to be 10,008. The city is the bishopric of the Roman Catholic diocese of Ardagh .
In the middle of the country - between Sligo and Galway on the Irish west coast on the one hand and the capital Dublin on the east coast on the other hand - Longford is 122 km away from Dublin; to Sligo it is 91 km.

Through the railway company Iarnród Éireann , the city is connected to the rail traffic in Ireland via InterCity ; the travel time to Dublin is just under two hours. Longford Railway Station opened in 1855.
Longford is on the N4 from Dublin to Sligo, one of the country's central national roads. In Longford, the N5 branches off the N4 via Castlebar to Westport in County Mayo , so that a large number of car tourists with destination Mayo and Connemara pass Longford. Drivers on the N5 have to cross the city - which seldom leads to traffic jams due to the well-functioning inner-city traffic regulation - while a bypass has existed for the N4 since 1995 .
A small regional airport with growing business volume is located southeast of the city near Abbeyshrule on the Royal Canal .

The local football stadium Flancare Park hosts the home games of the football club Longford Town FC , founded in 1924 .
The Lough Ree , one of the three large lakes in the course of Shannon , located a few kilometers to the southwest of Longford removed.
