The Lough Ree ( Irish Loch Rí ) is a lake in the center of Ireland .
After Lough Derg , it is the second largest and middle main lake in the Shannon . It is also one of the three great lakes to which the Shannon expands in its course. The other two lakes are Lough Allen in the north and Lough Derg in the south. There are also several smaller lakes in the Shannon. The lake is nestled between Longford , Westmeath and Roscommon Counties .
Lough Ree is popular with anglers and boaters. Lough Ree is accessible from Athlone at the south end of the lake, where there is a harbor that leads to the lake. At the north end of the lake is the small town of Lanesborough.
In the northern part of Lough Ree is the island Inchcleraun (Irish Inis Cloithrinn ), on which the remains of an early Christian monastery and churches are located. Legend has it that the mythical Queen Medb was killed on this island and her sister Clothru owned a castle. In the middle of the west side of Lough Ree, at the narrow point between the northern and southern lakes, is Rindoon , a peninsula steeped in history.
In the area around the lake there are many so-called mushroom stones , which are mushroom-shaped limestone formations that were created by the water being washed out.
Saints Island is west of Ballymahon in the eastern arm of Lough Ree in County Longford.
