Ballymahon ( Irish Baile Uí Mhatháin ) on the River Inny is a country town in the south of County Longford in the Republic of Ireland . It is located approximately 22 km west of the district capital Longford Town .

location

The River Inny, a tributary of the Shannon, flows from Lough Derravaragh in a westerly direction through Ballymahon to Lough Ree , where it flows into the Shannon. The 146 km long Royal Canal , restored some time ago and connecting Dublin to the Shannon, also has a connection to the city.

history

The name Ballymahon is derived from the Gaelic Baile Mathuna ("Mahon's city"). Mahon (Mathgamain mac Cennétig) was an Irish clan chief , older brother of Brian Boru , who fought a battle around 960 near Ballymahon on the Sruaith Fhuil ("River of Blood"), in the O'Rourke of Cavan of Brefni against Mahon was subject.

Attractions

  • St. Catherine's Church , built in 1800, is a focal point of the city with its pointed tower.
  • Ballymahon Mill , built in 1839, now restored as a residential home, is located on the southern outskirts of the city on the River Inny Bridge.
  • St. Matthew's Church , built in 1906 in Gothic style, is located in the northwest of the city.
  • Other monuments include Newcastle House (built from 1710 to 1860), Castlecore House (built from 1740 to 1765), Ledwithstown House (1746), the Bank of Ireland (1869) and the Convent of Mercy (1882).

Culture and sport

The writer Oliver Goldsmith was born on November 10, 1728 in a small neighboring parish, and his statue is on the main street of Ballymahon. Music Hall star Gertie Gitana had a nostalgic hit in the early twenties of the last century with “There's a cottage in Ballymahone”.

The city has the Bog Lane Theater, Gaelic Athletic Association Gaelic Football Club, Soccer Club Ballymahon AFC, and Inny Kayak Club. This club organizes boat trips on the River Inny, which is also a popular fishing spot for trout.
