Shannon (also known as Shannon Town , Irish Sionainn , An tSionna or Baile na Sionna ) is a town in Ireland . It is the only city ​​in Ireland built after World War II . In 1982 it received “town status”. Shannon has 9729 inhabitants (as of 2016).

The place is in the west of Ireland (in County Clare ), directly on the river Shannon of the same name .

development

In 1935 the government decided to expand transatlantic air traffic. In 1937 there was a first flight from Newfoundland to Foynes and in 1939 a test flight to the new Rineanna airfield. Although civil aviation was discontinued during the Second World War, the airfield was expanded further. The first regular flight from Gander ( Newfoundland ) took place on September 16, 1945 . At that time the range of the aircraft was still limited to approx. 4000 kilometers; therefore the shortest connection between Western Europe and Eastern North America had to be used. It was only at the end of the 1950s that it was then possible to fly more than 4,000 kilometers and reach the major airfields by direct flight. The importance as a transatlantic aviation hub therefore declined.

Description / tourism

The city is best known for Shannon Airport . In the city center there is a mall , which consists of a shopping center, a few pubs and a supermarket.

The low-cost airline Ryanair has one of its bases in Shannon. In the current flight schedule there are flights from Berlin-Schönefeld to Shannon (as of August 31, 2017).
