Ballot box

Switzerland

As a " ballot " ( " transition to the ballot box ") in Switzerland is the road ahead and to a "vote Sunday" - the voting and election deadline - called. Citizens entitled to vote ( Switzerland , a canton and a municipality , see Swiss citizenship ) cast their vote or votes - in votes on proposals, popular initiatives or referendums , as well as in elections .

Every year there are four federal “ballots” - regularly every three months, on dates known in advance that are set for the next 20 years. Cantonal and communal votes are also held on the same dates, on the same “voting (and election) day”, using the same procedure, and occasional elections (federal, cantonal and communal). Which, of course, makes sense for organizational as well as financial reasons - and, however, is left to the cantons or municipalities without any administrative or legal constraints. In addition to one of the votes, the National Council is re-elected every four years . The Council of States may also and / or at one of the voting dates, as also left to the cantons, as regulated in Article 50 III BV .

The voting documents - ballot papers , voting booklets , from time to time also ballot lists or ballot papers as well as a return envelope - are sent to each person entitled to vote at their home address four to five weeks, also earlier (but no later than three weeks) before the voting date, whereby special simplifications apply to the Swiss abroad . The voting and ballot papers must reach the counting offices by voting Sunday , where they will be counted by citizens with the support of their authorities. The voting and polling stations are open for one week, even longer - until noon on voting Sunday, the counting day.

Today most people vote by letter, in a postal vote that was introduced in all cantons between 1978 and 2005 . e-voting will be introduced gradually. The focus is on security, verifiability, and voting secrecy. In the gradual introduction of the pilot projects, the Swiss abroad , the “fifth Switzerland”, have priority.

The number of “ballot boxes” in Switzerland is unparalleled anywhere in the world - all government, cantonal and communal elections and referenda on constitutions, laws, financial proposals, popular initiatives, referendums, etc. combined. → See also: Voting and election participation (Switzerland)

Germany

In Germany , journalists occasionally use the term voting as a synonym for " election ".

Trivia

The language critic Wolf Schneider wrote:

"Not only incomprehensibility, but also ridiculousness follows from the obsession that you have to accept even the most nonsensical substitutions in order not to snub your old German teacher or your editor-in-chief. With silly automatism, the German press agency switches from the cabinet to the ministerial , from the election to the polls , from the moon to the satellite. "

The handbook of journalism , first published in 1996, contains the thesis that the word voting is “ probably the stupidest of all compulsive synonyms ”.
