Foynes ( Irish : Faing ) is a small port town in County Limerick in the west of the Republic of Ireland with 520 inhabitants (as of 2016).

Foynes is on the edge of rolling countryside on the south bank of the mouth of the River Shannon . The place is located in the north of County Limerick on the national road N69 from Limerick City via Listowel to Tralee in County Kerry , about 40 km west of Limerick City.

In the early days of aviation , the place was the westernmost take-off point on the European Atlantic coast for flying boats . That changed when the nearby Shannon Airport opened in 1942 on a moorland on the north side of the river. The launch site for flying boats closed in 1946. On site there is the Foynes Flying Boat Museum , a museum about flying boats.

The airport bar is the place of origin for Irish coffee .
