Listowel
Listowel ( Irish : Lios Tuathail ) is a country town in County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland . It is located on the River Feale , about 28 kilometers northeast of the county seat of Tralee , and has (including the surrounding area) 4820 inhabitants (as of 2016).
Attractions
- Listowel is important in Irish railway history because it was here in 1888 that the Listowel Ballybunion Railway, the world's first commercially used monorail , was opened. It was constructed in the "Lartigue system" named after its inventor . It could carry both people and goods. Today a replica of the historic railway, completed in 2003, is in operation in Listowel.

The Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award is presented as part of Ireland's largest literary festival, Listowel Writers' Week , which takes place annually in Listowel in early summer .
A well-known horse race takes place here every year in the last week of September.
In 1850, the future British Field Marshal and politician Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener , was born in Crotter House - Gunsborough Villa near Listowel . His father had bought the property there in 1848 after he left the British Army .

Listowel is on the N69. There are bus connections to Tralee, Cork and Limerick . The nearest train station is in Tralee.
