Listowel Castle ( Irish Caisleán Lios Tuathail ) is the ruin of a castle in the town of Listowel in County Kerry, Ireland .

history

Listowel Castle was built in the 15th century and was the last Geraldines fortress against the troops of Queen Elizabeth I of England in the First Desmond Rebellion . It fell after a 28-day siege by Sir Charles Wilmot on November 5, 1600; the garrison was executed in the following days.

The castle came into the possession of the Hare family , who carried the title " Earls of Listowel " after it had been taken from the FitzMaurices, Knights of Kerry .

description

The remains of the castle consist of two of the four original towers connected by a heavy curtain wall. The arch below the battlements is worth mentioning . Excavations and ancient records of the castle show that it once resembled Bunratty Castle in County Clare .

In 2005 the restoration began on behalf of the Board of Public Works . The masonry was cleaned by specialized craftsmen and the upper part of the building, which had become particularly dilapidated over time, was restored and made waterproof. A new external staircase, which was adapted to the architecture of the building, was added to make the upper floors accessible.

Considered one of the finest examples of Anglo-Norman architecture in County Kerry, the ruined castle has been partially restored. It is considered a national monument and can be visited in guided tours.

More buildings in the neighborhood

Another Anglo-Norman castle in Woodford in Listowel had the Knights of Kerry built in the period after 1600.

The Senchai Literary Center , housed in an adjoining Georgian-style townhouse , gives visitors an insight into the castle's history. According to the head of this facility, Cara Trant , the whole project has a significant impact on Listowel's value as a tourist attraction.
