Ulrich Horstmann (born May 31, 1949 in Bünde ) is a German literary scholar and writer who also publishes under the pseudonyms Horst-Ulrich Mann and Klaus Steintal .

Life

Ulrich Horstmann passed his Abitur at Freiherr-vom-Stein-Gymnasium in Bünde / East Westphalia in 1967 and completed his studies in English and Philosophy at the University of Münster with a doctorate (dissertation topic: Edgar Allan Poe ) in 1974 . He was a lecturer at the University of South Africa in Pretoria . In 1983 he completed his habilitation with a study on aestheticism and decadence . From 1991 until his retirement in 2014 he was professor for English and American literature at the University of Giessen . He lives in Marburg / Lahn .

Ulrich Horstmann, who since 1976 has published essays , novels , plays and translations from English in addition to academic works , became known in 1983 for his treatise Das Untier , in which he took a philosophical position that was diametrically opposed to the peace-loving zeitgeist of those years: he propagated a perspective of "human flight" from which the self-extinction of humanity with the help of the accumulated nuclear arsenal appeared as the target point of (cultural) history. The publication prompted the “ New Germany ” to inquire, “when Professor Horstmann last consulted his neurologist”. Horstmann's "philosophy of eventuality" drove the pessimism of his role model Schopenhauer to the Gnostic extreme. That the ridicule of Swift's A Modest Proposal was also the godfather is proven by the later publications, which were sometimes accused of extreme world disgust and nihilism , not least of all the poems of “fighting silence ”.

Ulrich Horstmann, who is a member of the PEN Center Germany , received the Kleist Prize in 1988 at the suggestion of Günter Kunert .
