geography

The county lies in the Central Irish Plain and is bounded to the west by the River Shannon and Lough Ree .

history

In the Middle Ages the area belonged to the Kingdom of Meath ( Cro Inis ). 1173 the area was used by the Anglo-Normans conquered and under the name of domination Lochsewdy first to the De Lacy , awarded later to the Verdun fief. In 1316 the area was reunited with the rest of Meath and only separated as an independent county in 1543.

In agriculture , dairy farming predominates; only the county seat of Mullingar and Athlone have textile industries and distilleries .
