Delvin ( Irish : Dealbhna or Dealbhna Mhór ) is a small town in County Westmeath in the east of the Republic of Ireland .

history

The Irish name of the place refers to the Dealbhna , a tribal group in Ireland, whose branch Dealbhna Mhór settled here. The Dealbhna were derived from Delbáeth , a god of Túatha Dé Danann or, according to more recent legend, from Suman, son of Lugh Delbáeth and grandson of Cas, the ancestor of the important Dál gCais dynasty, with whom they claimed to be related. Dealbhna Mhór rulers had the family name Ó Fionnalláin. They were expropriated by Hugh de Lacy as a result of the Anglo-Norman invasion and their land was given to his brother-in-law Gilbert de Nugent.

The history of Delvin is linked to two castles: one probably built by Hugh de Lacy in 1181 for Gilbert de Nugent, which is why it is known as the Nugent Castle ; the remains of this castle can be found on the main street Delvins. Gilbert de Nugent later built his own castle nearby, which was burned down when Cromwell invaded Ireland and rebuilt in the 17th century, called Clonyn Castle . Shortly after the Second World War, around 100 Jewish orphans, survivors of the Holocaust , were accommodated in this castle, which is in a dominant location on the outskirts of Delvin near the N52 .

Location and population

Delvin is in the east of the County Westmeath on the national road N52 between Kell (22 km) and 20 km away Mullingar . The N51 also joins the N52 from Drogheda via Navan (31 km from Delvin) and Athboy .

The population of the place was determined at 740 people in the 2016 Census , after 416 people in 2006 and 271 people in the 2002 Census, which corresponds to an increase of 173% within 14 years.
