Nugent Castle ( Irish Caisleán an Nuinseannaigh , also Delvin Castle , Caisleán Dhealbhna ) is the ruin of a low castle near the city center of Delvin in the Irish county Westmeath .

history

Hugh de Lacy, Lord of Meath , had Nugent Castle built in 1181 for his brother-in-law, Gilbert de Nugent . He had come to Ireland from England with De Lacy in 1171 and had settled on a piece of land in Delvin. De Nugent received the title of Baron Delvin in the Lordship of Meath . Today the Earl of Westmeath holds this title.
