Earl of Westmeath is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The historic family seat of the Earls was Clonyn Castle in Delvin in County Westmeath .

Award, subordinate and other titles

The title was created on September 4, 1621 for Richard Nugent, 7th Baron Delvin . He had inherited the title Baron Delvin from his father in 1602 , which was created around 1389, also in the Peerage of Ireland, for his ancestor Sir William Nugent .

The 8th Earl was promoted to Marquess of Westmeath on January 12, 1822 . The Marques title expired on his death on May 5, 1871, the Earldom fell to his 5th cousin as 9th Earl.

The current title holder is William Nugent as 13th Earl.
