description

Clonyn Castle is a square, two-story, symmetrical two-story building. It resembles a castle, has at each corner a round corner tower and was of lime - stone built. Inside there is a large hall that extends over two floors with a gallery and arcades.

The country house was one of the last Victorian style barons in Ireland.

history

A former castle called Nugent Castle (now a ruin in the center of Delvin) is said to have been built by Hugh de Lacy in 1181 for his brother-in-law, Sir Gilbert de Nugent . Sir Gilbert de Nugent, who originally came from the area around Nogent-le-Rotrou in France , came to Ireland with Hugh de Lacy in 1171. Sir Gilbert received the title of Baron Delvin in the Lordship of Meath.

A second castle was built in 1639 by Richard Nugent, 1st Earl of Westmeath , on a hill above what was then the village of Delvin. It was called Delvin Castle or Clonyn Castle . As Cromwell's army was on the march, led Nugent that the castle was burned down, and fled to Galway . The castle was rebuilt by his grandson, who lived there until 1860.

Lord Greville and his wife, Lady Rosa , had today's country house built a short distance from the previous castle. After the death of George Nugent, 1st Marquess of Westmeath , in 1871, the property had fallen to Lady Rosa, the only surviving child. She was married to Fulke Southwell Greville-Nugent, 1st Baron Greville , who in 1866 had received royal permission to use the additional surname "Nugent". The country house remained in the possession of the Nugent family until 1922, when Patrick Nugent sold it and emigrated to Scotland . Thereafter, a community of Australian nuns was housed in Clonyn Castle .

In the period after the Second World War , the country house served for a short time at the instigation of Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld as a home for Jewish children, most of them Holocaust orphans. One had the businessman and philanthropist Yankel Levy from Manchester persuaded the villa and the surrounding land to buy for £ 30,000, so that about 100 children from 5 to 17 years at times could be accommodated there before they were reunited with their families or a new Life in England, America or Israel. As a result, Levy was insolvent .

Clonyn Castle is currently owned by a Mrs. Dillon .
