Killua Castle ( Irish Caisleán Chill Dalua ) is a country house near the village of Clonmellon in County Westmeath, Ireland .

Sir Benjamin Chapman had the current house built in 1780. It contained a hall, a dining room, an oval salon, a breakfast room, and a main and a back staircase. There were also stables and a barn. From here the Chapmans administered the surrounding 36 km² farmland in the 18th century. The ruin was renovated in 2006.

history

Killua Castle and the surrounding land was given to Benjamin Chapman , a captain of Cromwell's army, around 1667 ; the property had been confiscated by the Order of St. John . After Chapman's death the castle fell to his eldest son, William , and after his death in 1734 to his son, Benjamin . Benjamin Chapman died in 1779 and so his son, also Benjamin , followed him ; he was then promoted to baronet .

The current country house was built by Benjamin Chapman, 1st Baronet, in 1780 after the original castle was demolished. He bequeathed it to his brother Thomas in 1810 , who had a large tower and various other towers added, including a library tower, a stair tower and a tower with a back door, in the early 1820s. He also let the battlements of the villa complete and Raleigh - obelisk place them close. In 1837 he was followed by his son, Sir Montagu Chapman, 3rd Baronet , who was missing off the coast of Australia in 1852 . The estate was inherited by Montagu's brother, Benjamin Chapman, 4th Baronet , and then his son, Montagu Richard Chapman, 5th Baronet . The 5th Baronet died childless in 1907 and his widow, a cousin, shared the property between her brother's four legitimate daughters, Sir Thomas Chapman, 7th Baronet . The house and the remaining 4.9 km² of land were sold in 1949.

Until 2006, Killua Castle was an ivy-covered ruin without a roof.
