Navan ( Irish An Uaimh - the cave - older name An Odbha pronounced Ova) is a town and the administrative seat of County Meath in Ireland with 28,399 inhabitants (2016).
geography
Navan is 42 meters above sea level, at the confluence of the Blackwater and Boyne , 28 kilometers northwest of Dublin .
history
In the 12th century, the place came under the Norman rule of the Pale , when Jocelyn de Angulo , a knight in the retinue of Hugh de Lacy , the Lord of Meath , built a castle on the place. Hugh de Lacy bestowed the title of Baron de Navan on Jocelyn de Angulo . The place under the protection of the fortification developed into a trading center over time.
The seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Meath was formerly in Navan until it was moved to Mullingar after a dispute with the bishop .

- Two kilometers northeast in Donaghmore are a round tower and the ruins of a church.
- Four kilometers to the northeast are the 400 year old ruins of Dunmoe Castle .
- Ten kilometers to the south-east is the Hill of Tara with numerous prehistoric and prehistoric monuments.

economy
The Tara Mines , Europe's largest lead and zinc mine, are located in Navan . Navan was also famous for its carpets; the company "Navan Teppiche" closed however in 2003. Today the main branch of the economy is the furniture industry.
traffic
Rail: From roughly the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, Navan was connected to two railway lines:
- from Dublin via Clonsilla to Navan and on to Kingscourt
- from the main Dublin-Belfast line branching off at Drogheda to Navan and on to Oldcastle .
Both routes have now been closed. There have been plans for many years to build a direct connection from Dublin to Navan again, but these are repeatedly pushed back.
Bus: The state bus company Bus Éireann has several lines that stop in Navan.
Road: Navan has been on the M3 Motorway , which runs from Dublin to the North West, since 2010 .
Town twinning
Navan has a partnership with the two Italian municipalities of Bobbio in Emilia-Romagna and Broccostella in Latium .
