Mullingar ( Irish An Muileann gCearr - the crooked mill ) is the capital of Westmeath County in the Irish province of Leinster . The city is also the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Meath . The population at the 2016 Census was 20,928.

One of the city's main exports is pewter . The export has been increasing for several years.

Mullingar Cathedral

The construction of the Cathedral of Christ the King ( Christ the King ) was begun in 1933 and completed in the 1936th The solemn consecration took place on August 6, 1939. At the request of Pope Pius XI. It was given the name Christ the King's Church as the first cathedral in the world . It is registered in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) of the Republic of Ireland.

The mighty two-tower building in neo-renaissance style replaced a previous building from the 1830s, St. Mary's Cathedral , which was demolished in the 1930s. Inside the cathedral, the Russian artist Boris Anrep created some mosaics .

  • The Portloman menhir is a stone pillar with an incised cross not far from the south-western bank of Lough Owel.
  • In Kilbride, south of Mullingar, is the only surviving De Profundis stone in Ireland.

Tourism and leisure activities

  • The Royal Canal , which was built in the early 19th century and has lost its economic importance today, flows around the city center , but can be used for tourist boat trips. A part of the cycle route Capital Route (EV2) from Moscow to Galway runs along it, some parts of which are not yet completed in Ireland.
  • In the area around Mullingar there are several lakes, Lough Owel with Church Island, Lough Lene and Lough Ennel, which are particularly popular with anglers.
