Eugene Casserly (born November 13, 1820 in Mullingar , Ireland , †  June 14, 1883 in San Francisco ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of California in the US Senate .

Born in County Westmeath , Ireland, Eugene Casserly was a toddler when his parents emigrated with him to the United States in 1822. The family settled in New York ; the boy's schooling was initially taken over by his father. He received his college degree from Georgetown University in Washington . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1844 and began practicing law in New York.

Casserly was subsequently also active as a journalist. He was the editor of Freeman's Journal and worked as a writer for numerous other newspapers. From 1846 to 1847 he was a corporation counsel in the service of the City of New York before he moved to San Francisco in 1850, where he published several newspapers with Public Balance , True Balance and Standard . In 1851 he worked as a state printer for the State of California.

After retiring from journalism and working exclusively as a lawyer for several years, Eugene Casserly was elected to the US Senate in 1868. He took up his mandate in Washington on March 4, 1869 and resigned on November 29, 1873. During this time was among other things chairman of the Committee on Engrossed Bills . After retiring from the Senate, he returned to his law firm. In 1878 and 1879 he took part in the Constitutional Convention of California.
