Charles Norton Felton (born January 1, 1832 in Buffalo , New York , †  September 13, 1914 in Menlo Park , California ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of California in both chambers of Congress .

The young Charles Felton attended a private school in Syracuse . He then studied law and was also admitted to the bar; however, he never practiced as a lawyer. Instead, he worked in California, where he moved in 1849, in the commercial sector and later in the banking industry. In 1853 he became sheriff in Yuba County , after which he worked as a tax collector.

In 1868, Felton was appointed chief financial officer at the United States Mint in San Francisco ; he also served as Assistant Treasurer of the United States until 1877 , making it one of the highest positions in the US Treasury . He was a member of the California State Assembly from 1878 to 1882 before being elected to the United States House of Representatives . There Felton represented from March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1889 the fifth constituency of California.

He did not run for re-election in 1888 and initially left Congress. After the death of US Senator George Hearst on February 28, 1891, Felton was elected as his successor. He held this mandate from March 19, 1891 to March 3, 1893, before again waiving the possibility of re-election. He then worked from 1903 to 1907 as director of the state prisons of California.
