Joshua "Josh" Keck Harder (born August 1, 1986 in Turlock , California , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , he has held the tenth seat of the state of California in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . He was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Joshua Harder was born on August 1, 1986 in Turlock , California , and graduated from Modesto High School . He holds degrees in Political Science and Economics from Stanford University and Masters of Business Administration and Masters of Public Policy from Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School .

His mother, Linda, is a volunteer grief counselor in Turlock. His father, Mark, is an ophthalmologist and his younger brother, David, is a senior at California State University, Stanislaus .

Harder worked for Bessemer Venture Partners in New York City from 2014 to 2016 , then moved to San Francisco and back to Turlock in 2017, teaching economics at Modesto Junior College .

Political career

In May 2017, Harder announced that he would run for the tenth seat of the state of California in the United States House of Representatives .

In the primary, Harder was 16.7 percent behind the incumbent tenth-seat holder, Jeff Denham of the Republican Party (37.8 percent).

The election on November 6, 2018, Harder won against Jeff Denham with 52.3 percent of the vote.
