Sam Farr (born July 4, 1941 in San Francisco , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Between 1993 and 2013 he represented the 17th congressional district of the State of California in the US House of Representatives . Since 2013 he has represented the 20th constituency of his state there. In 2016 he decided not to run again. His membership in the Congress ends on January 3, 2017.

Life and career

Farr grew up in Carmel . In 1963 he graduated in biology at Willamette University in Salem ( Oregon ). He attended the Monterey Institute of International Studies in 1964 and the Law Faculty at Santa Clara University until 1968 . He is fluent in Spanish. From 1964 to 1966 he worked for the Peace Corps in Colombia . He was District Administrator ( Supervisor ) in Monterey County from 1980 to 1975 and a member of the California State Assembly from 1980 to 1993 . Since 1993 he has represented the 17th constituency of the state of California in the US House of Representatives as the successor to Leon Panetta .

Political opinions

Farr is seen as an opponent of American engagement in Iraq and voted against the PATRIOT Act . In September 2008 he voted against the American-Indian Agreement on the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy.
