Charles Edward Wiggins (born December 3, 1927 in El Monte , California , †  March 2, 2000 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1967 and 1979 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives ; then he became a federal judge .

Career

Charles Wiggins attended public schools in his home country. Between 1945 and 1948 and again from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War , he served in the US Army . After completing a law degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and being admitted to the bar in 1956, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1954 and 1960 he was a member of the planning commission of the city of El Monte. From 1960 to 1964 he sat there on the city council; between 1964 and 1966 he was also mayor there.

In the 1966 congressional election , Wiggins was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 25th  constituency of California , where he succeeded Ronald B. Cameron on January 3, 1967 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1979 . Since 1975 he represented there as the successor of Andrew J. Hinshaw the 39th district of his state. During his time as a congressman, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, as well as the Watergate affair in 1974 .

In 1978 Charles Wiggins renounced another candidacy. From 1984 until his death he was a judge at the Federal Court of Appeals for the ninth district. He died in Las Vegas on March 2, 2000 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .
