After nine re-elections, she was able to exercise her mandate in Congress until January 3, 2017. There they sat in the Armed Services Committee , the Committee on Homeland Security and the Joint Economic Committee . Her political work focused on education, the fight against crime, economic development and the protection of older citizens. Loretta Sanchez voted against the Iraq war in 2002. After representing her state's 47th constituency in Congress between 2003 and 2013, she returned to the 46th constituency after re-election in 2013.

Sanchez announced that he would run for a seat in the US Senate to succeed her party colleague Barbara Boxer in the 2016 elections . In the primaries on June 7, 2016, she came second after Kamala Harris (40 percent) and qualified for the main election in November. Since 2012, with the exception of the president , California has no longer applied primary elections for all electoral posts : all candidates are voted on in a single primary, regardless of their party affiliation (so-called nonpartisan blanket primary ). In the actual election, the two most successful candidates in the area code compete against each other, while the remaining applicants are eliminated. Since Sanchez took second place with around 16 percent and thus left all candidate Republicans behind, Harris and Sanchez were the first two Democrats to meet in the actual Senate election. Harris won the election with 62.6% of the vote. Unlike Harris, Sanchez could count on little support from large democratic parties in the election campaign; in addition to US President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden , California Governor Jerry Brown and his deputy Gavin Newsom also spoke out in favor of Harris. The outgoing Senator Barbara Boxer also promoted Harris as a successor. In July 2016, Sanchez sparked public controversy when she accused President Obama of supporting Harris only because of her African-American identity. Since Sanchez no longer ran for the House of Representatives in favor of the Senate candidacy, she had to leave Congress on January 3, 2017.

Together with her sister Linda , she formed the only female siblings to date who also belong to the congress.
