Arthur M. Free

Arthur Monroe Free (born January 15, 1879 in San José , California , †  April 1, 1953 ) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1933 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Arthur Free attended public schools in Santa Clara and then the University of the Pacific at Stockton . After a subsequent law degree at Stanford University and his admission to the bar in 1903, he began to work in this profession in San José. In 1904 he moved to the Mountain View Community , whose legal representative he was between 1904 and 1910. From 1907 to 1919, Free was a District Attorney in Santa Clara County . He then practiced again as a private lawyer in San José. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1914 and from 1920 to 1936 he was a delegate to the respective regional party conventions of the Republicans in California.

In the congressional elections of 1920 Free was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of California , where he succeeded Hugh S. Hersman on March 4, 1921 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1933 . In 1932 he was defeated by the Democrat John J. McGrath . The election result was in line with the federal trend at the time in favor of the Democratic Party.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Arthur Free worked again as a lawyer. He died on April 1, 1953 in the city of his birth, San José.
