Santa Clara County is a county in the state of California in the United States . The county seat is in San José .

The county is bordered to the northwest by San Mateo County , located in the San Francisco Bay Area . The so-called Silicon Valley and the associated Santa Clara Valley are located in Santa Clara County . This is particularly known for its numerous agricultural crops, such as apples, maize and citrus fruits, which also play a significant role in the regional economy. The cultivation of grapevines is also central to the area.

The San Andreas Fault runs through the Santa Cruz Mountains in the south of the county.

history

Santa Clara County was one of the earliest counties in California and was founded in 1850. Parts of the county area were given to Alameda County in 1853 . It was named after the Santa Clara de Asis Mission , which was built here in 1777. The mission was named after Saint Clare of Assisi .

There are 6 National Historic Landmarks in Santa Clara County . A total of 105 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Santa Clara County's population was 1,682,585. There were 565,863 households and 395,538 families. The population density was 503 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 53.83% White, 2.80% African American, 0.67% Native American, 25.56% Asian, 0.34% Pacific Islander, and 12.13% other races Groups; 4.66% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 23.98% of the population.

Of the 565,863 households, 34.90% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.90% were married couples living together, 10.00% were single mothers. 30.10% were not families. 21.40% are single households and 5.90% have someone living there who is 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.41 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.70% residents under 18 years of age, 9.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 35.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.00% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 102.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 101.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 74,335 , and the median income for a family is $ 81,717. Males had a median income of $ 56,240 versus $ 40,574 for females. The per capita income was $ 32,795. 7.50% percent of the population and 4.90% of families are below the poverty line. 8.40% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.40% were 65 years of age or older.
