The Tehama County is a county in the state of California of the United States . The county seat is Red Bluff .

The county is located in Northern California and has an area of 7672 square kilometers, of which 29 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Shasta County , Plumas County , Butte County , Glenn County , Mendocino County, and Trinity County .
history
Tehama County was formed from Butte County , Colusa County, and Shasta County in 1856 . The county was named after the city of Tehama . Possible origins are in the Arabic word tehama ("hot lowlands"), in the Spanish word tejamanil or "high water" in the dialect of the Indians of North America .
A total of 10 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Tehama County had a population of 56,039 people as of the 2000 census . There were 21,013 households and 14,898 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.79% White, 0.57% African American, 2.10% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, and 8.26% other races Groups; 3.39% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 15.83% of the population.
Of the 21,013 households, 32.90% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.60% were married couples living together, 11.60% were single mothers. 29.10% were not families. 24.00% were single households and 11.50% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.08.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.40% of residents under the age of 18, 7.80% between the ages of 18 and 24, 25.70% between the ages of 25 and 44, and 23.20% between the ages of 45 and 64 15.90% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 97.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.00 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,206 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,277. Males had a median income of $ 30,872 versus $ 22,864 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,793. 17.30% percent of the population and 13.00% of families are below the poverty line. 24.00% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.20% were 65 years of age or older.
