The Modoc County is a county in the state of California of the United States . The county seat is Alturas , the only city in the county.

The county is located in the northeast corner of California and has an area of 10,887 square kilometers, of which 672 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Klamath County , Lake County , Washoe County , Lassen County , Shasta County, and Siskiyou Counties .
history
Modoc County was established in 1874 from the eastern part of Siskiyou County .
It derives its name from the Modoc Native American tribe who live on the Pit River . The Modoc Indians gained worldwide attention in the Modoc War (1872–73), when over 500 US Army soldiers were unable to defeat fewer than 55 Modoc warriors who were hiding in the lava channels that are now the Lava Beds National Monument form. The war ended when Captain Jack , the leader of the Modoc, shot and killed General Edward Canby during a peace talks. Most of the Modoc warriors were arrested and forced onto the Klamath Reservation in Oregon .
Modoc County has a National Historic Landmark , the Tule Lake War Relocation Center , which was used to intern Japanese Americans during World War II. 17 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Modoc County had 9,449 people. There were 3,784 households and 2,550 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.94% White, 0.69% African American, 4.21% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 5.69% other races Groups; 2.78% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 11.51% of the population.
Of the 3784 households, 29.10% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.60% were married couples living together, 8.80% were single mothers. 32.60% were not families. 28.10% were single households and 12.70% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.60% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.70% between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 102.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.70 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,522 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,978. Males had a median income of $ 30,538 versus $ 23,438 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,285. 21.50% of the population and 16.40% of families are below the poverty line. 29.70% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.60% were 65 years of age or older.
