Kern County is a county in the southern state of California in the United States . The county seat is Bakersfield .
history
The county was formed in 1866 and named after the Kern River . Bakersfield was elected Kern County's county seat in 1874. The first seat of administration was in Havilah until 1874.
Kern County has two National Historic Landmarks , The Forty Acres and Nuestra Senora Reina de la Paz . 21 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

Kern County had a population of 661,645 people as of the 2000 census . There were 208,652 households and 156,489 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 61.60% White, 6.02% African American, 1.51% Native American, 3.37% Asian, 0.15% Pacific Islander, and 23.22% other races Groups; 4.14% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 38.39% of the population.
Of the 208,652 households, 42.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.60% were married couples living together, 14.50% were single mothers. 25.00% were not families. 20.30% were single households and 7.80% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.50 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 31.90% residents under 18 years of age, 10.20% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, 18.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 105.30 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 105.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,446 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,403. Males had a median income of $ 38,097 versus $ 25,876 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,760. 20.80% percent of the population and 16.80% of families are below the poverty line. 27.80% of these were under 18 years of age and 10.50% were 65 years of age or older.
