Taft is a city in Kern County in the US state of California , United States , with 9200 inhabitants ( 2004 ). Taft is about 50 km west-southwest of Bakersfield .
The geographic coordinates are: 35.13 ° north, 119.44 ° west. The urban area has a size of 39.2 km².
The city was first named as Siding Number Two.
Natural resources
Gold was discovered in 1851 and oil in 1865.
On March 14, 1910, the largest recorded blowout ("gusher") in the history of oil production in the United States, the Lakeview Gusher Number One , occurred . An estimated 1,400,000 m³ (1,230,000 tons) of oil leaked between March 14, 1910 and September 1911. Today there is a memorial plaque at the exact location, as well as a museum of oil production nearby.
