Tehachapi is a city in the United States and is located in Kern County in the state of California .
The city had a population of 32,643 in 2000 , including 5800 prisoners of the California Correctional Institution .
The valley location near the Mojave Desert forms a kind of oasis . A famous golf course, lakes for fishing and sailing as well as extensive landscapes for horse riding make the city attractive.
The Tehachapi Loop railway structure is located near the city . This is a loop in the railway line to gain height in a narrow space. Long trains cross themselves there.
The city's most famous resident is Michael Melvill , the first private astronaut in space history.
