San Luis Obispo County is a county in the US state of California . The county seat is in San Luis Obispo .

The county has a total area of 9,364 km² and is located on the Pacific coast between Los Angeles and San Francisco . It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the counties: Kings County , Kern County , Santa Barbara County, and Monterey County .
history
Father Junípero Serra founded the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa on September 1st, 1772. This mission is still a living part of the downtown area in San Luis Obispo. The county was founded at the time the State of California was established in 1850.
There are 3 National Historic Landmarks in San Luis Obispo County , the Carrizo Plain National Monument , Hearst Castle and the San Miguel Arcángel Mission . A total of 32 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

The population of San Luis Obispo County was 246,681 as of the 2000 census . There were 92,739 households and 58,611 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.60% White, 2.03% African American, 0.95% Native American, 2.66% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, and 6.21% other races Groups; 3.44% were from two or more races. 16.29% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 92,739 households, 28.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 50.40% were married couples living together, 9.10% were single mothers. 36.80% were not families. 26.00% were single households and 10.30% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.70% of residents under 18 years of age, 13.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 14.50% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 105.60 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 105.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 42,428 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,447. Males had a median income of $ 40,726 versus $ 27,450 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,864. 12.80% percent of the population and 6.80% of families are below the poverty line. 11.40% of these were under 18 years of age and 5.90% were 65 years of age or older.
