Morro Bay is a city in San Luis Obispo County in the US state of California , United States , with 10,234 inhabitants (as of 2010 ). The urban area has a size of 26.3 km². Morro Bay was founded in 1870 as a cargo port for shipping dairy and meat products.

history

Originally the Chumash Indians lived in the area, especially at the mouth of the Morro Creek.

On September 8, 1769, the first European discovery group from Upper California , the Spanish Portola Expedition, came down the Los Osos Valley. It camped next to what is now Morro Bay.

The city was later named after Morro Rock .

On October 18, 1587, the first Filipinos in America arrived at Morro Bay. They sailed in the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza. One of them was murdered by local Indians while scouting.

The town of Morro Bay was founded by Franklin Riley in 1870. It was a port city for exporting dairy and farm products. Riley played an important role in the construction of a pier.

A subspecies of the butterfly, the Morro Blue ( Aricia icarioides moroensis ) was discovered by the entomologist Robert F. Sternitzky in June 1929 in Morro Bay.

During the 1940s, Morro Bay developed an abalone -Fisheries industry. This peaked in 1957, and stocks have declined due to overfishing.

Part of Morro Bay is a designated bird reserve. Morro Bay is also a state and national estuary . Much of Morro Bay is a game reserve.
