Pismo Beach is a city in San Luis Obispo County in the US state of California , United States , with 8700 inhabitants (as of 2004 ). The urban area has a size of 34.9 km², of which 9.4 km² is land area.
Pismo Beach was founded in 1891 and is located roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles . The Pacific beach is partially passable. Large colonies of pelicans can be found on the cliffs of Pismo Beach in the summer months.
Pismo Beach got its name from the Chumash language . Pismo means tar that was mined in the nearby Price Canyon .
Pismo Beach has been accessible by train since 1996, the nearby train station is called Grover Beach Amtrak Station .
