history
Solano County was one of the first established counties in California. It was created around the same time as the state was founded in 1850.
The name of the county comes from the Spanish Franciscan and missionary , Father Francisco Solano , whose name was passed on to a local Indian chief when he was baptized. Before he was given the name Solano , the chief was called Sem-yeto , which means "brave" or "courageous hand". At the request of General Mariano Vallejo , the county was named after Chief Solano , who once ruled the land and tribes between Petaluma Creek and the Sacramento River . "Solano" is a common surname in northern Spain, particularly in Navarra, Saragossa and La Rioja.
