Fairfield is a city in Solano County in the US state of California , United States , with 105,446 inhabitants (2006) and the seat of the county administration . The urban area has a size of 97.6 km². The city is halfway between San Francisco and Sacramento and has slightly fewer residents than Vallejo , the county's other major city. Other nearby cities are Suisun City , Vacaville , Rio Vista , Benicia and Napa.

Fairfield was founded in 1856 by clipper captain Robert H. Waterman, who named the city after his hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut.

Fairfield is the birthplace of the composer and conductor Quinto Maganini (1897–1974).

history

The area's earliest inhabitants settled in what is now the Rockville and Green Valley region. Items found in the area are 5000 to 6000 years old and some of the oldest Indian settlements in northern California are here. In 1810 the Spanish military attacked the Suisun Indians.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census , Fairfield had 105,322 residents. The population density was 1,080.5 / km². According to the 2010 census, the 48,407 whites made up 46% of the city's total population. The Afro-Americans had a share of 15.7%, the indigenous people were the smallest group of the population with 0.8% or 869 people. The Asians, predominantly Filipinos, Indians, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese are a rapidly increasing population group. 27.3% of the population are Hispanics.

There were 34,484 households, 14,725 had children under the age of 18, and 18,461 were married couples. 15.1% of the households had a female housekeeper without a man, 6.3% had a male housekeeper without a woman. There were 2052 (6.0%) unmarried opposite-sex partnerships. 6802 households had a single housekeeper, of which 2500 households had a housekeeper 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.98. There were 25,843 families, the average family size was 3.42.

Biggest employer

The USAF's Travis Air Force Base and the headquarters of Jelly Belly are located at Fairfield . Insurance company Partnership HealthPlan of California is based in Fairfield and Anheuser-Busch runs a large regional brewery in Fairfield.
